Walking...

The area around Flachau has an abundance of walking routes.  We have detailed our favourites, some start in Flachau and some in the locality. You can find out more information about walking routes by contacting the Tourist Office. For planning your own routes around Flachau use Kompass Map #31, available from the SPAR Supermarket in Flachau.

Altenmarkt Circular (Map)

You can walk a good circular route to Altenmarkt by walking along the river and then going under the A10 bridge (1) at Feuersang.  Once under the bridge take the 2nd path on the left leading up a small hill.  After a while the road forks (2); take the right fork heading up the hill signposted 'Winterbauer'.  At the top there is a T-junction (3), take the left turn and follow the road into Altenmarkt.  Relax with a Hefeweissen before returning to Flachau on the cycle path  (4) that runs parallel to the river Enns, through Reitdorf and into Flachau.   The easiest way to pick up the cycle path is to follow the signs for Radstadt.  As you head out of town you will find the cycle path on your left by the river.

Kleinarl and Jägersee

Drive, cycle or catch the bus to Kleinarl and from there you can pick up the footpath signposted 'Jägersee' that winds through the countryside with stunning views all around.  Once at Jagersee there is a circular walk around the lake and a good restaurant at the lakeside (not open in the winter).

Eben

The walk to Eben is a similar distance to Altenmarkt and uses the radweg along the river Enns through the valley.  However, before you reach Altenmarkt the cycle path splits, one going to Eben, the other continuing to Altenmarkt.  The path into Eben passes Eben See on your right, a great place to stop for a swim/sunbathe before proceeding into Eben or commencing your return journey.

RadstadtRadstadt Circular (Map)

Walk along the river Enns and go under the A10 bridge (1) at Feuersang.  Once under the bridge take the 2nd path on the left leading up a small hill.  After a while the road forks (2); take the right fork heading up the hill signposted 'Winterbauer'.  At the top there is a T-junction (3), take the left turn and follow the road into Altenmarkt.  Find the river again (4) and follow it to Radstadt.  After relaxing in Radstadt a while head out of the village in the direction of the golf course (5) and ski lifts.  Pick up the road that runs between the golf course and the ski lifts in the direction of Altenmarkt.  Take a left turn a few hundred yards after Farnwang (6).  This will eventually bring you out on the main road from Altenmarkt to Zauchensee.  Turn left and pick up the Schoerweg (7) back over the Winterbauer and into Flachau (Feuersang)

Flachauwinkl See

Flachauwinkl is linked well with all the footpaths to Flachau. One option is to pick up the cycle path running along the river in Flachau and head up the hill for good views over Flachau.  Continue to Flachauwinkl See and take a walk around the lake before via Flachau village itself.

Walk to the WinklalmThe Winklalm - Mar 2007

Follow the route above for Flachauwinkl See walking close to the river on the church side of the village.  Once you have passed the Autobahn Meisterei look for the earliest opportunity to cross the road and re-join the river.  Once you reach Flachauwinkl See follow the footpath around it and keep heading in the direction of Flachauwinkl village.  1 to 2 miles along the route you will see the very well-signposted road to the Winklalm on your right.  It is a steep climb up but the views are rewarding.  Once you pass under the chairlift you know you are nearly there.  The Winklalm is open most of the year, but in summer on set days only so check with the tourist office before setting out.  On the return journey follow the same route back to Flachauwinkl See but continue on the left hand side of the valley in order to enjoy the fitness equipment (?!) that you'll pass in the woods.

TappenkarseeJägersee to Tappenkarsee

Tappenkarsee sits at 1820m and there are 2 options from where to start the walk.  The first is from the car park beside Jägersee.  However, we would recommend that you take the second option of driving alongside the lake, through a barrier, and down a gravel track to the second car park.  From here the walk takes between 1.5 and 2 hours and is well signposted.  The path is good but quite steep and does cross a couple of streams.  When you get to Tappenkarsee you can have a (cold) swim or paddle from the beach.  There are also a couple of mountain huts open for food in the summer.  Take the same path down, otherwise you'll end up in Grossarl!  On the way down you get some great views down the valley to Jägersee, Kleinarl and Wagrain.

Gasthof SattelbauerSattelbauer Circular (Map)

Walk along the river Enns and go under the A10 bridge (1) at Feuersang.  Once under the bridge walk uphill on the road, following the signs for the 'Winterbauer'.  There is a footpath signposted through the trees which you can take instead, but it is quite steep.  Once past the Winterbauer do not be tempted to follow the signs for the Sattelbauer (although this is a shorter and still very pleasant route)! (2) Instead, carry on and head down the hill into Altenmarkt.  You should come to the edge of the village at the Alpenland Hotel (3).  Turn right here, heading in the direction of Zauchensee.  This is a long stretch where you can walk along side the stream but some of it is along the road.  You will pass the campsites, the Arlhof Hut at the bottom of the ski area and, further on, a new thermal development.  Eventually you will reach the turning to the Sattelbauer on your right-hand side (4); it is very well sign-posted.  Here begins the climb, and we must warn you that there are no seats on the way!  At the top of the hill you will come to the Gasthof Sattelbauer and can enjoy a relaxing drink on the patio.  From here the road winds its way back down into Flachau.

RupertiseeWalk to Rupertisee

There are 3 options for walking to and around Rupertisee which is set in the mountains above Wagrain. Which ever way you choose it provides a nice feature to include in a walk. It has lots of benches so is a great place for a picnic and has a small childrens' play area.

1. The easy way…..Take the Flying Mozart gondola up to the top and walk down the mountain following the signs to Rupertisee. You could either then continue the walk down to the mid or base station of the Mozart.

2. The moderate way….Take the Flying Mozart up to the mid station and walk up to Rupertisee signposted from the mid station and then continue up for lunch at the Kogelalm or Wagrainer Haus. Then take the gondola down.

3. The difficult way…Park in the car park to the side of the Flying Mozart. Follow the signs up to the mid station/Kogelalm/Grießenkar. These are a little tricky to spot we found them up a side street to the right of the Mozart lift once you find the first signs it is well marked. It is a fair climb up to the mid station but the views are stunning, there is a small bar at the mid station where you can rest up before the final climb. From here Rupertisee is signposted up the mountain and takes about 30 minutes to reach. From Rupertisee you can continue up for lunch in one of the restaurants or start your descent. There are a variety of marked paths down so you should be able to find an alternative route down.

AlmseeFilzmoos Almen

This is a walk which leads you up through trees, mountain paths and by streams to 2 restaurants and a lake called Almensee. It is a gentle walk which can be taken from Filzmoos centre. Head for the well signposted tourist information. From here continue up the hill to a big sign marking lots of walking routes. This will be your first marker to Oberhofalm/Unterhofalm. At this point there is also the option to drive up the mountain to the same destination but this is a private mountain road which charges 4.5 Euros to drive up.

Following the signs up the path splits fairly early on one route signed to Oberhofalm and the other to Unterhofalm. It doesn’t matter which path you take as they are next to each other but it does mean that you can take the other path on the way down to give variety.

The 2 restaurants at the top are quite busy but have amazing views. They serve the usual fayre but we would recommend that you give the butter milk and the Käsebrot a try.

Walking - Sport GasteinSport Gastein Winter Wanderweg

As well as good cross country skiing Sport Gastein also has a beautiful winter walk way which is prepared daily and runs close to the cross country routes. It is 4.5km long and there is a restaurant about half way round.
